Hospital Teaching Service

Curriculum Intent

The intent of Cranbury College Hospital Teaching Service is to provide patients with a wide range of lessons, ensuring continuity of their education throughout the duration of their hospital stay. The principles within the DfE statutory guidance for Local Authorities, January 2013; ‘Ensuring a good education for children who cannot attend school because of health needs’, underpins our curriculum. Therefore, every patient regardless of health needs is able to access a good education, which is personalised to meet their individual needs and gives them the opportunity to experience, where possible, a breadth of curriculum experiences. Our curriculum is designed to support the social and emotional needs of patients, which help with reintegration back into their enroled school.

Short-Stay Patients

Lessons are offered to all school aged patients, primarily focussing on English/Phonics, Mathematics, Art, Science and Reading for all patients from EYFS through to Year 11. Every term has a topic, and additional ‘Special Days’ are celebrated, which provides all pupils with cross-curricular learning opportunities. The curriculum is designed to not only reinforce the value of education but also help to build confidence, provide continuity, identify and close any gaps in learning and provide the patient with normality throughout their hospital stay. For patients in KS5, academic support is provided in the subjects they are studying within their enroled school or college where possible.

Long-Stay and Recurrent Patients

For long-term patients, bespoke timetables are built in partnership with their enroled school, medical and social care professionals, and parents/carers. This ensures continuity of learning based on the curriculum they would receive in their enroled school, developing core skills whilst aiming to reduce any anxiety around returning to their normal setting. The Hospital Teaching Team ensures the patient’s school receives regular updates on progress, engagement, and assessment, which allows for a high quality of teaching to be delivered which is relevant and purposeful. When it is not possible to build a bespoke timetable in partnership with a patient’s enroled school, the Hospital Teaching Team will carry out assessments in English/Phonics and Maths, take into consideration any SEND and medical needs to create a timetable which closely mirrors the curriculum they would be accessing according to their school year.

Key Stages

EYFS and KS1

The curriculum for EYFS and KS1 incorporates a variety of programmes for teaching and assessment. Phonics and literacy is based on Read Write Inc, with reading supported by Read for Good, who ensure every patient is able to engage with high quality books which are of interest to the patient and support the promotion of reading not only for learning but for enjoyment too. Maths is taught using Numberblocks and the White Rose scheme of work. Science is taught using resources and lesson guidance from The Ogden Trust. All of these programmes follow the National Curriculum and allow the Hospital Teaching Team to assess, build on prior knowledge, identify gaps in knowledge and apply a variety of strategies to address these.  Long-stay patients will follow the curriculum and schemes of learning of their own enroled school, which will be delivered by the Hospital Teaching Team.

Art and Design Technology is an important part of our curriculum due to the therapeutic benefits to our patients. Both subjects follow the National Curriculum and may be themed to special events, seasonal changes, etc.

The Hospital Teaching Team are able to support and deliver the DfE’s Phonics Assessment for KS1. Patients have access to IT equipment to support learning and develop core skills.

KS2 / KS3

The curriculum for KS2 and KS3 follows the National Curriculum in all core subjects. Maths follows White Rose scheme of work, and Science is taught using The Ogden Trust lesson resources. For patients requiring additional support, the Read Write Inc, Fresh Start programme is utilised, which helps to build confidence, increase fluency in reading and writing, and develop understanding. Reading is supported by Read for Good and all patients are provided with the opportunity to take a book home. The Hospital Teaching Team are able to provide teaching in most subject areas with the aim of ensuring that patients are progressing through the subjects/topic areas they were learning in school to aid a smooth transition back with the gaps in learning minimised.

Long-stay patients will follow the curriculum and schemes of learning of their own enroled school, which will be delivered by the Hospital Teaching Team.

Art and Design Technology is an important part of our curriculum due to the therapeutic benefits to our patients. Both subjects follow the National Curriculum and may be themed to special events, seasonal changes, etc.

The Hospital Teaching Team are able to help prepare patients and deliver the KS2 multiplication check and SATS assessments. Patients have access to IT equipment to support learning and develop core skills.

KS4

Patients in KS4 are offered a curriculum which supports core and vocational subjects they are studying for GCSE and all other subjects from Pre-Entry Level through to Level 2. The Hospital Teaching Team will endeavour to teach according to the Exam Board specification for each programme of study. When the Exam Board is not known:

  • White Rose Maths scheme of work is followed
  • English literature is taught based on the text / poetry the patient is currently studying.
  • AQA Scheme of Work is followed for all Science subjects.

Patients with low literacy levels will be engaged in the Fresh Start programme from Read Write Inc. Reading is actively promoted and is supported by Read for Good, who provide a wide range of reading matter for all patients. Art is an important part of our curriculum due to the therapeutic benefits and is offered to all patients (even when it is not being studied for GCSE). The Hospital Teaching Team will work closely with the enroled school of our long-stay and recurrent patients to ensure there is a continuity of learning with regular feedback of progress, engagement and attainment. Patients have access to IT equipment to support learning and develop core skills. 

The Hospital Teaching Team are able to help prepare patients for GCSE examinations and can also carry out the invigilation of exams should they need to be taken during their hospital stay.

KS5

Patients in KS5 are offered a curriculum which supports core and vocational subjects being studied from Pre-Entry Level through to A-Level. The Hospital Teaching Team will endeavour to teach according to the Exam Board specification for each programme of study. Patients who are studying GCSE’s and Level 2 subjects will follow the curriculum for KS4. Patients with low literacy levels will be engaged in the Fresh Start programme from Read Write Inc. Art is an important part of our curriculum due to the therapeutic benefits and is offered to all patients (even when it is not being studied in school/college).
